Savior Blues 02:39
SAVIOR BLUES Streets getting meaner Property condemned World dividing up Us against them. Try to deny it. Your home is a cage Living in the city Of the minimum wage. CHORUS They say "Come to Jesus And you will see the light." But if you don't find your savior My door's still open tonight. They ask you for an answer It's this and then it's that The state of indecision Is your natural habitat. You're at a disadvantage You never learned to cheat You never hitched your wagon To some famous athlete. CHORUS The dogs of war are restless Itching to break free. Straining at their leashes Baring jagged teeth. Trouble in the big house Confusion has its price. What started out as virtue Is now a rancid vice. CHORUS Copyright 1995 by Fred Grittner

UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF LOVE Under the influence of love I went and took your words to heart. I believed you when you said We would never grow apart. What has come between us I'd really like to know. Are there any answers Or must I let you go? Oh Darlin' what are we to do? Oh Darlin' what are we to do? Under the influence of love I promised more than I could give. I know that I can never change Enough to fit the way you live. I stand outside the picture That we've been living in. The frame is still intact But the canvas is wearing thin. Oh Darlin' what are we to do? Oh Darlin' what are we to do? Time will take care of me I leave things up to chance. It does no good to try and fight The force of circumstance. Under the influence of love We made a world in which to hide. Now that world is cold and dark The river parts, we must divide. Make your disappearance Tonight I will make mine. Soon the'll be no evidence We shared this space and time. Oh Darlin' what a way to end Oh Darlin' what a way to end. Copyright 1995 Fred Grittner

I SAW THROUGH YOU I saw through you the first time we met All the others saw give but I saw get I Saw Through You Before you saw through me You push all the buttons on the radio You push all the buttons on the men you know I Saw Through You Before you saw through me Bridge You don't want a lover Or even a friend Just an accomplice A means to an end You know what you want So you always pretend And everybody else is fooled You think you're a mystery with secrets to hide You're a sealed envelope with nothing inside And I Saw Through You Before you saw through me Words and Music copyright 1995 Fred Grittner [Back][Home]

FIRE AT MIDNIGHT Fire at midnight Ashes at the dawn. All the burned out lovers Have come and now are gone. Scattered to the four winds Nothing much remains 'Cept the shade of memory That colors all my chains Let em roll Let em roll Let em roll the night away The love we tasted Cannot endure this day Leave me in peace now What kind I cannot say Let em roll Let em roll the night away. She asked the question That I could never ask She asked the question And an answer was my task And I surely did remind her Of someone in her past When she heard the words I spoke She broke out in a laugh Let em blow Let em blow Let em blow my words away I did not mean them But I thought I had to say Something she wanted To ease her mind and stay. Let em blow Let em blow my words away. Lying here beside her In the aftermath well spent No lies were exchanged Just our bodies lent. Silent in these moments We hold each other tight Oh to be a prisoner Of this sweet and endless night Let em blow Let em blow Let em blow my blues away The love I've waited for Has come perhaps to stay While she's here now I'll love her for today Let em blow Let em blow my blues away Copyright by Fred Grittner 1995

COPPER-LINED SKY The sun was sinking It was do or die. I saw a blackbird spreading Its wings to fly I tried to warn it I got no reply It melted its wings In that Copper-Lined Sky CHORUS n that Copper-Lined Sky In that Copper-Lined Sky In that Copper-Lined Sky In that Copper-Lined Sky If the Lord has mercy It's in short supply My well-laid plans Have all gone awry I tried to tell her That the well went dry. But she was shaking her fist At the Copper-Lined Sky. CHORUS I saw a preacher praying I stopped and asked him why He said this ain't no prayer It's just my long goodbye I tried to calm him He shrugged and gave a sigh He started cutting a hole In that Copper-Lined Sky CHORUS All these fiery embers Keep shooting by Racing down the canyons They quickly multiply Come the morning They'll be cool and dry It all went up in smoke. To that Copper-Lined Sky CHORUS Copyright 1995 by Fred Grittner All Rights Reserved

COMMON PRAYER The dust has settled The crowd has gone Deep in this silence I have to move on No good reason To let go too fast The future must carry Days from the past CHORUS I bow my head And close my eyes You are there We join our hearts In Common Prayer I feel your presence The room's filled with light It goes without saying You're with me tonight I may be dreaming But who really knows I'll ride this feeling As far as it goes CHORUS Your name's still mentioned Your friends still call The hurt has been lessened They've broken my fall God, how I miss you We've both paid a price We can't walk into That same river twice CHORUS Copyright 1995 Fred Grittner All Rights Reserved

ALWAYS SOMETHING HANGING OVER ME I used to think there'd come a day When all my blues would fade away And I'd have time to think things through And see which dreams were gonna come true REFRAIN It's very clear to me It's very clear to see There's Always Something Hanging Over Me Always Something Hanging Over Me Always Something Hanging Over Me Always Something Hanging Over Me Now love and money are all that I lack Living in the red just skirting the black I pledged my heart and I pledged my home My baby and the bank just called in their loans REFRAIN Now I don't worry 'bout no judgment day We all get judged daily in every way I've drunk the bitter from a brimming cup When I got to the bottom it filled right up REFRAIN copyright 1995 by Fred Grittner All Rights Reserved

THINGS FALL INTO PLACE I watch you running ragged Trying to bulletproof your case Take a breath and let Things Fall into Place Life moves in all directions Still your itching for the chase Take a breath and let Things Fall into Place Things Fall into Place BRIDGE Pulling when you should be pushing Pushing when you don't know what to do Thinking that you must do something When doing nothing will help you make it through Dreams can be atomic They can blow up in your face Take a breath and let Things Fall into Place BRIDGE All the cards are on the table But you still hold an ace Play that card and let Things Fall into Place Can't you hear the choir It sounds like "Amazing Grace" Close your eyes and listen As Things Fall into Place Things Fall into Place Things Fall into Place Copyright 1995 by Fred Grittner All Rights Reserved

I DID (WHAT I REALLY DIDN'T WANT TO DO) I did what I really didn't want to do I went and got involved with you Now everything they said was true I did what I didn't want to do I did what I didn't want to do I slipped and fell into your open arms You played on me with all of your charms I resisted for a minute or two Then I did what I didn't want to do I did what I didn't want to do. Please don't try to deliver That teasing kiss Don't send that shiver Back down my spine Chalk it up to too much whiskey I was way too gone And you were way too frisky That night Man what a sight I swear with you I never was impressed Now I'm driven I'm a man possessed I twist with every turn of the screw I did what I didn't want to do I did what I didn't want to do Copyright 1995 Fred Grittner

YOU'RE A WOMAN I was feeling so damn low Then you knocked upon my door Since that night my life has changed I'm not lonely anymore You're a Woman Who means so much to me You're a Woman Who acts so differently And I hope that you will finally settle down When you finder that sweeter, brighter higher ground You're a Woman We exchanged our sorry tales Talked them out till there was no pain Then giving me your love and trust You fell on me like gentle rain You're a Woman Who means so much to me You're a Woman Who loves so faithfully And I hope that you will keep your poet voice And you'll feel you always have more than one choice You're a Woman Never thought that this might happen So you took me by surprise Every day that I am with you My love intensifies All our days have been so full Let them touch the days ahead But no matter what may come I won't regret that I have said You're a Woman Who means so much to me You're a Woman Who acts so differently And I hope that I will always have a place Behind the eyes that grace your lovely face You're a Woman copyright Fred Grittner 1995

THY WILL BE DONE Looking for some answers At the bottom of the glass Looking for some answers Before these questions pass Thy will be done Thy will be done Thy will be done Standing at the crossroads Wondering where to go A stranger's voice beckons me The stranger seems to know Thy will be done Thy will be done Thy will be done I've given up on logic I've walked away from faith I can't explain a single thing I just count my mistakes Whatever force is driving me Is sly and well-concealed I'm waiting for the shakeout When all truths are revealed Looking for some answers No matter where they lead Looking for some answers With all deliberate speed Thy will be done Thy will be done Thy will be done Copyright 1994 Fred Grittner All Rights Reserved

NOTHING EVER CHANGES IN MY HEART The winds of fate blow hot and cold I never know what will unfold But Nothing Ever Changes in my Heart My hopes may rise and overflow. My dreams may fall like dominoes Nothing Ever Changes in my Heart CHORUS Nothing ever changes Your love abides in me The constant I rely on What's now will always be I watch the world and take it in There's not much left that's genuine But Nothing Ever Changes in my Heart My words may fade and disappear My songs may fall down on deaf ears Nothing Ever Changes in my Heart CHORUS Time shoots by and memories dim Doubts increase as chances slim But Nothing Ever Changes in my Heart I don't cross fingers or knock on wood I made my peace when I understood CHORUS Copyright 1993 Fred Grittner All Rights Reserved

about

This album was the first I recorded in my home studio. In 1995, recording to a computer hard drive was just getting off the ground. I could record but there were no audio software tools in the program I used to shape the sound. I used a few pieces of hardware--a compressor and a reverb unit--but that was it.

I was never satisfied with the sound of the album and a few years later I made my first attempt at rearranging and remixing the songs. That effort stalled out after a few mixes. Now, 20 years later, I have rearranged (instruments replaced, removed, and/or added), remixed, and mastered a different version of the album. Nine of the 12 songs have revised arrangements. To my ears, the songs now come to life. Audio recording software is light years beyond the technology of the mid-1990s.

I again want to thank Dale Jernberg and Dan Lippert for their contributions to the album.
